The Journal of the American College of Dentists is a scholarly publication presenting proactive and informative perspectives on issues affecting the dental profession and society, together with enlightening features on areas such as leadership, ethics, governmental and private agencies, policy development, the American College of Dentists, and professional history. The Journal has been published since 1934, and its first editor was Dr. William John Gies. The Journal is mailed to all Active and Honorary Fellows. Life Fellows and Fellows exempted from dues for special circumstances must pay an annual Journal subscription fee. The Journal of the American College of Dentists (ISSN 0002-7979) is published quarterly by the American College of Dentists, Inc., 839J Quince Orchard Boulevard, Gaithersburg, MD 20878-1614 . Second class postage is paid at Gaithersburg, Maryland, and at an additional mailing office. The Journal of the American College of Dentists is copyright by the American College of Dentists, Inc. in the year of publication.


                                MISSION

The Journal of the American College of Dentists shall identify and place before the Fellows, the profession, and other parties of interest those issues that affect dentistry and oral health.  All readers should be challenged by the Journal to remain informed, inquire actively, and participate in the formulation of public policy and leadership to advance the purposes and objectives of the College.  The Journal is not a political vehicle and does not intentionally promote specific views at the expense of others.  The views and opinions expressed herein do not necessarily represent those of the American College of Dentists or its Fellows. 

The 2008 subscription rate for members of the American College of Dentists is $30 and subscription is included in the annual membership dues. The 2008 subscription rate for nonmembers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico is $40. All other countries are $60. Foreign optional air mail service is an additional $10. Single copy orders are $10.  All claims for undeliverable/not received issues must be made within 90 days. If a claim is made after this time period, it will not be honored.

The mission of the Journal of the American College of Dentists is presented in the front of each issue and depicted on the right.

While every effort is made by the publishers and Editorial Board to see that no inaccurate or misleading opinions or statements appear in the Journal, they wish to make it clear that the opinions expressed in the articles, correspondence, etc. herein are the responsibility of the contributor. Accordingly, the publishers and the Editorial Board and their respective employees and officers accept no liability whatsoever for the consequences of any such inaccurate or misleading opinions or statement.

For bibliographic references, the Journal is abbreviated J Am Coll Dent and this should be followed by the year, volume, number, and page. The Journal is a Publication Member of the American Association of Dental Editors.

Issues in Dental Ethics
Issues in Dental Ethics serves as a publication within the Journal of the American College of Dentists. It is the only major forum for the publication of scholarly articles in dental ethics. It is coordinated by the American Society for Dental Ethics and has its own associate editor and editorial review board.

 Information Brochure

General information about the American College of Dentists is described in this brochure available from the Executive Office.  Similar information is presented in our online Overview.

 Ethics Handbook for Dentists

This newly revised Ethics Handbook for Dentists, available from the Executive Office, is designed for graduating students and practicing dentists. Approximately 5,000 booklets are distributed annually to dental schools in the United States and Canada on a complimentary basis. The current version incorporates relevant portions of the former dental student booklet, Dentistry—A Health Profession.

 Awards Program Brochure

This brochure, available from the Executive Office, describes the awards offered from the American College of Dentists, including the award nomination process, nomination review procedures, purpose of the awards, criteria for award selection, and eligibility.  The Gallery Brochure

This brochure, available from the Executive Office, describes the various gift items available for purchase from the American College of Dentists. More information is available about The Gallery and items for sale.

 Core Values & Aspirational Code of Ethics

This publication, available from the Executive Office, presents the standards of conduct which define the essentials of honorable behavior for a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.  This publication is presented online in our White Paper.

 The Ethics Wallet Card

This plastic, calendar-sized card includes "The ACD Test for Ethical Decisions" on the obverse and "Core Values" on the reverse.  The card is presented in a bi-fold holder.  The Ethics Wallet Card is designed for senior dental students, but has shown to be valuable to other groups as well. The Ethics Wallet Card can be viewed online. Ethics Wallet Cards are available from the Executive Office.

 Special Conference and Travel Brochures

These brochures describe special conferences, summer conferences and travel programs sponsored by the American College of Dentists or the American College of Dentists Foundation. These brochures, when applicable, are available from the Executive Office and/or are distributed to Fellows at the Annual Meeting or through ACD News.

 Electronic Section Manual

The Electronic Section Manual (CD) is designed as a guide and reference to promote effective Section management.

 Multimedia Dental History Resource

Dental History, the multimedia dental history resource, was distributed on CDs to first year dental students in the United States and Canada beginning in early 2004 (limited numbers of CDs are available through the Executive Office). This program is on hold.

 American College of Dentists Foundation Brochure

While not a publication of the College, this brochure does summarize programs and activities supported by the American College of Dentists Foundation and giving opportunities, including the Gies Fellow and Gies Benefactor programs and symbolic Named Funds.

 Out of Production

The College no longer publishes the Fellowship Guide, the dental student booklet, Dentistry—A Health Profession., or the Ethics Handbook for Dentists (electronic). The Fellowship Guide has been replaced by information on this site and the online Membership Directory. Dentistry—A Health Professionk was incorporated into the revised Ethics Handbook for Dentists. The Ethics Handbook for Dentsits (electronic) was available from the Executive Office and included a 25-question self assessment test and an electronic version of the dental student booklet. It has been replaced by Courses Online Dental Ethics (CODE) at www.dentalethics.org.
